Shadowridge is one of those neighborhoods where everybody's got somewhere to be. The call came in on a weekday morning, a 2021 Terrain sitting in a driveway off one of the side streets, owner already late.
He'd bought a replacement fob online after his original crapped out. Made sense on paper. The factory fob ID matched what he ordered, the fob looked right, and the CR2032 was fresh. But the Terrain wouldn't recognize it. No start. Key-not-detected warning on the dash. He'd already wasted two evenings watching videos about relearn sequences that don't apply to this system, and the night before he'd called the dealer. I was in his driveway inside an hour. The fob he'd bought online was the right body, right button count, looked identical to the original. The problem is that a smart key for this vehicle isn't just hardware. The transponder has to be enrolled into the vehicle's security system through the OBD port using a professional programmer. There's no ignition-turn sequence, no shortcut. The security access timer alone takes time to count down, and that's built into how GM locks down the key learning process to slow down theft. You can't rush it.
I ran the job through the OBD port, enrolled the fob he already had, and verified the engine start. Doors, remote lock, remote unlock, all of it confirmed working before I packed up.
The whole thing was done before a dealer tech would have even pulled his paperwork. He paid a fraction of what the dealer quoted and kept his car in the driveway overnight instead of a service lot across town.
The fob he bought online was fine. It just needed someone with the right tools to finish the job.
