How long will a replacement flip key last?

The electronics hold up well. Properly programmed, they don't degrade. The part that actually wears on a flip key is mechanical: the hinge pivot, the blade itself, and the shell around the buttons. GM flip keys from this era see a lot of daily use and the hinge is the weak point. If the shell cracks or the hinge loosens but the transponder and circuit board are still good, I can sometimes move the internals into a fresh shell without a full reprogram. Saves time and money. The key system itself, once enrolled, stays enrolled unless the vehicle's security system is reset or the battery is fully pulled for an extended period.

What if the new key stops working a few weeks after you program it?

On GM vehicles from this generation, a common post-programming symptom is a theft-deterrent warning on the dash, the kind that shows up even after a successful program. That's usually not a key failure. It tends to point to the security antenna ring around the ignition, a weak connection at the body control module, or occasionally a relearn that didn't fully complete on the first cycle. I've seen it come up on Terrains specifically when the battery had a low charge during the original program. Diagnose it fresh, fix the actual cause, done.

I bought a replacement fob online. Can you just program it, or do I need a whole new key from you?

Bring it. If the fob you bought matches the factory FCC ID for the 2017 Terrain and the dealer part number lines up, I can program it. I'll check it before I start. My flip key starts the car fine but the remote buttons stopped working. Are they on the same system?

They're in the same fob but they operate independently. The transponder that starts the car communicates through the ignition cylinder at close range. The remote buttons broadcast outward to the body control module. So yes, one can die while the other keeps working.

First thing to check is the CR2032. A battery that's low enough to kill the remote signal can still have enough juice to feed the transponder at close range. Swap the battery before assuming anything is wrong with the fob or the programming. If a fresh CR2032 doesn't bring the remotes back, the issue is either the fob's transmitter circuit or the receiver in the vehicle. I can test both on site and tell you which one failed.
