It was mid-afternoon when my phone rang, and the guy on the other end was already behind the eight ball. Line cook, Del Mar, shift starting in under an hour. His 2011 CR-Z was sitting dead in a parking lot near Carmel Valley and his head chef had already started texting him. You could hear the clock in his voice.
I told him I was about twenty minutes out. He said okay and went quiet, which meant he was standing there staring at his car doing math he did not like.
When I got to the lot, the key fob battery was the first thing I checked. CR1616, which is a thinner cell than most people keep in their junk drawer, and it was completely flat. But a fresh battery alone was not going to fix it, because the fob had also lost its pairing to the vehicle security system. That happens when the battery runs fully dead on these: the remote functions drop out of memory and the car acts like it does not recognize the key for remote operation, even though the transponder still technically starts the engine.
I swapped the battery, then hooked up through the diagnostic port to re-register the fob. The whole hands-on portion was around twenty minutes. I handed him a spare key before I left so he would have a backup sitting in his glovebox instead of nothing.
He clocked in at 4:10. Later that night he sent a text saying thanks. I did not need the text, but I appreciated it. That is the kind of call where the timing is the whole job.
