A food truck operator near Carmel Valley had his key snap in the ignition of his 2011 Honda CR-Z early one morning. Half the blade was stuck in the cylinder and the other half was in his hand. He couldn't turn the car off cleanly and was afraid to force it. I could hear the panic in his voice when he called.
I got there and used my HO01 Lishi to extract the broken piece without damaging the ignition wafers. Once it was out clean, I decoded the lock and cut a fresh key from the readings. His car uses a separate remote fob, FCC ID MLBHLIK-1T, so the fob was fine. I just needed to cut and program a new transponder blade. The immobilizer accepted the new chip after one registration cycle.
He was back on the road in under an hour from when he called, and the total bill was $185. A dealer would have charged $395 minimum plus the tow and a multi-day wait. A snapped key at a food lot feels like a disaster. For these older Hondas, it's one of the simplest jobs I run.
