I got a call from a guy parked in a lot off the main strip in Bonsall. His 2015 CR-Z had gone quiet. Pressed the unlock button, nothing. Tried again, still nothing. He'd already been sitting there a while when he called me because the dealer in the area couldn't see him until the following day.
He mentioned almost as an aside that he was diabetic and had a pharmacy run he needed to make. Said it like he was trying not to make it a big deal. It was a big deal.
I was about fifteen minutes out. When I got there, the key was genuinely dead, CR1616 had given up. Swapped the battery on the spot and tested the remote functions. Locks, unlock, the works. All came back clean. But when he tried to start it, the engine turned over and stalled right back out. That pointed to an immobilizer sync that had gone off, which happens sometimes after a jump start scrambles things or after a key goes completely dark for a stretch.
Plugged in through the OBD port, resynced the transponder to the vehicle, and had him try it again. Started and held. I walked him through the backup procedure too, so he knew what to do if the battery ever ran down on him again before he could get it swapped.
From his phone call to his engine running was about 40 minutes. He made it to the pharmacy. The dealer would have had him waiting overnight. Sometimes this job is just about being there before a small problem turns into a bad afternoon.
