2014 Honda CR-Z
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How do I know you are not a scam locksmith?

Three things to check before anyone shows up at your car. Ask for a license number, ask for a firm written estimate, and confirm the company name. Scam operations quote a low number on the phone and then invent reasons to double it once they have your car blocked in. It happens with Honda owners specifically because key programming sounds complicated and people assume they have no choice. We quote a firm price for your specific vehicle on the phone.

Q: Will the replacement key work exactly like the original?

Yes. The 2014 CR-Z remote head key handles two separate jobs in one housing: the transponder talks to the immobilizer to authorize the engine, and the remote side controls the lock and unlock buttons. Both have to be programmed correctly. We handle both, then walk through every function before leaving. Engine start, remote lock, remote unlock, all three buttons confirmed working. You are not getting a half-done job where the car starts but the remote is dead, or vice versa.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2014 CR-Z. Can I program it myself?

The remote portion of some Honda keys can be self-enrolled through an onboard sequence when you already have a working key in hand. But the transponder side of a remote head key is a separate matter. If the transponder is not already registered to your car, the engine will crank and not start, or start and immediately stall. That part requires programming equipment.

Q: My 2014 CR-Z starts fine but the remote stopped working after I changed the battery. What did I miss?

Almost always the battery itself. The CR-Z remote head key takes a CR1616, which is a specific size. It is thinner than the cells most people grab off a convenience store shelf. A wrong-size battery can make contact just enough to seem like it is working, then fail within days. Pop the key open, confirm the cell is actually a CR1616, check that it is seated flat against both contacts, and retest.

2014 Honda CR-Z Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A family near Kit Carson Park Area called me on a Friday night. They had come out of a taqueria to find their 2014 CR-Z completely unresponsive.

The fob wouldn't lock, wouldn't unlock, and when they finally got in manually, the car would not start. Neither of them knew that the remote head key carries the transponder inside the same housing, so a fully dead fob battery is not just an inconvenience. It means the car genuinely cannot read the key and will not authorize the engine to run.

They figured the car was staying there until Monday. They called me mostly just to ask.

I was about 15 minutes away and already had the right blank and a CR1616 in stock. I carry the correct battery for this specific key because that is the one detail that bites people. The repair was clean: fresh battery seated correctly, reprogram the remote functions, confirm the transponder was communicating with the immobilizer, test the engine start, test every button. The whole thing was done on the curb in under 30 minutes.

They drove home that night. The dealer option would have meant leaving the car, waiting out the weekend, and paying a lot more for the same result. When the van is stocked right, a 9pm Friday call is not a crisis. It is just a job.
