A guy down near Moonlight Beach in Encinitas had his 2006 S2000 sitting in the parking area off B Street. He had one key left, the original, and the plastic head was cracked almost in half. The blade was still intact but the key was being held together more by habit than by the housing. He wanted a spare cut and programmed before the original gave up entirely.
He asked me straight up whether the key I'd make would actually work or whether he needed to go to Honda for the real thing. That's the question I get a lot on older Hondas, and it's a fair one.
What I told him: the blank I carry for this application uses the correct transponder chip that the S2000's immobilizer expects. The blade gets cut on my machine to match his existing key, and I verify the cut against the ignition and door before I hand it over. The programming ties the new chip to the car. After that, the car doesn't know or care whether the key came from a dealer counter or my van.
I cut the new key, programmed it on site, and tested it in the ignition and door lock while he watched. Turned over on the first try. His old cracked key stayed enrolled too, so he had both working until he decides to retire it.
He mentioned he'd called Honda of Escondido before reaching out to me. They told him to bring the car in, and the estimate they gave him was something he described as "a lot more than I expected for just a key." He didn't need the dealer version. He needed the key to work, and it did.
