This can happen if you're using a copied key where the blade was cut but the chip was never programmed, if the chip inside the key head got damaged, or if the key lost its enrollment somehow. A worn or cracked key head can also damage the chip without any visible sign on the outside.

The fix is to confirm whether the key is actually enrolled, and if not, re-enroll it or cut and program a replacement. That's a same-day job. There's no hidden emergency blade on this key and no override button. The chip has to be right.
