1997 Kia Sportage
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Do I need to tow my 1997 Sportage to the dealer for a key replacement?

No. On a 1997 Sportage, key replacement is entirely mechanical. There is nothing about this job that requires a dealer's shop or their diagnostic systems. A mobile locksmith can decode your lock or work from the key code on file and cut a replacement on the spot. Towing an older vehicle like this adds cost and time before anyone has even looked at the actual problem. We handle it where the car sits.

Q: What do I need to prove I own the vehicle before you cut a key?

A valid photo ID and proof of ownership, either your registration or your title. I verify the VIN from the dashboard plate or the door jamb sticker on your Sportage to confirm I am cutting to the right vehicle. Same standard a dealer would hold you to, done on site in a few minutes rather than at a service counter after you have already towed the car in.

Q: My 1997 Sportage key turns but the ignition feels stiff or grinds. Is that a key problem or an ignition problem?

Could be either, and on a vehicle this age it is worth separating the two before you spend money on the wrong fix. First, try the key in both door locks. If the door locks feel smooth but the ignition is stiff, the ignition cylinder's wafers are likely worn or binding on their own. That is common on early Sportages that have seen a lot of years and key cycles.

Q: Can I get a key made from the VIN if I have zero keys left?

Yes. The key code for the 1997 Sportage can be looked up from the VIN through the appropriate records, or decoded directly from the lock cylinder. All-keys-lost on a purely mechanical vehicle like this is one of the cleaner situations a locksmith deals with. No programming, no module resets. Just the code, the cut, and you are back in.

1997 Kia Sportage Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in South Poway, I got a call from a guy who had been driving his 1997 Sportage for years with the same worn-down key. He said it would stick in the ignition and he had to wiggle it just right to get it out. His spare had gone missing at some point, so he was down to one key that was getting harder to trust every week.

He was parked outside a shop off Scripps Poway Parkway when he called. The key had finally given him enough trouble that he didn't want to risk shutting the car off.

I got there and pulled the existing key. The cuts were worn enough that a fresh copy from it alone would have been marginal. I decoded the lock cylinder instead, got a clean reading, and cut a new key blade to match. Then I cut a second one while I was at it, because a single key on a 27-year-old vehicle is a situation waiting to repeat itself.

Both keys worked clean in the ignition and both door locks. No wiggling, no coaxing.

He had been thinking he might need a dealer to look at the ignition. The dealer visit never happened.

Kia Sportage Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I am locked out with no spare key. Can you come to me in South Poway?▼

Yes. The 1997 Sportage is a mechanical key vehicle, which means I can cut a working key on site without towing anything anywhere. I carry the equipment to decode your lock cylinder or pull the key code from the VIN record right at the vehicle. You do not need a tow truck, and you do not need to wait for a dealership to open or fit you into their service schedule.
