This is different from a dead fob battery. A dead CR2032 only kills the remote buttons. But if the transponder chip inside the key body is damaged, corroded, or the key has been cloned incorrectly, you get the start-and-stall pattern.

It can also show up after a battery replacement done carelessly, where the fob was pried open and the chip cracked, or after the key got wet and the internal components corroded. I diagnose this on site. If the chip is the problem, a replacement key properly cut and programmed to the car fixes it.

I bought a replacement fob online for my 2017 Sportage. Can I program it myself?

No. Not on this vehicle.

The 2017 Sportage does not have an onboard self-programming sequence for the remote flip key. There's no ignition-cycling trick, no button sequence that registers a new fob without equipment. You need a programmer connected to the OBD port to enroll the transponder chip to the immobilizer and sync the remote functions.

The fob you bought online isn't wasted. It just needs a tech with the right tools to finish the job. That's a normal call for me, and it's worth the money you already spent on the part rather than buying everything through the dealer.
