A guy came to me at Rancho Santa Fe Village one morning in a situation I see more often than people think. He had snapped his key in the ignition of his 2018 Kia Sportage. Half the blade was still seated in the cylinder. Half was in his hand. He had already tried fishing it out himself with a straightened paperclip, which pushed it a little deeper. He was calm about it, but you could tell he had been standing there for a while before he called.
The first job was extraction. I worked the broken piece out of the cylinder carefully, protecting the wafers so the lock stayed functional. Once it was out, I decoded the lock directly and cut a fresh blade from those readings. No guessing off the worn original, no copy-from-copy degradation.
Then the programming side. The transponder chip in the blade needed to be enrolled to the immobilizer, and the remote functions needed to be paired as well. Both done through the OBD port on site. The whole job, from extraction through a fully tested working key, ran under an hour.
He did not need a tow. He did not need to wait at a dealer for multiple days or deal with the parts order that comes before the appointment. He drove out of that parking lot the same morning he called.
