2016 Mazda CX-9 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Out in Fernbrook, Ramona, I got a call from a guy who'd been dealing with an annoying problem for about two weeks.
His 2016 CX-9 was starting fine most mornings, but twice it had shown a key-not-detected warning when he walked up to the driver door. He figured it was fluke. Then one evening it wouldn't detect the fob at all, and he sat in a parking lot for ten minutes clicking before it finally woke up and let him start it.
He thought the fob was dying. He'd already ordered a replacement online and wanted me to program it.
When I got there, I asked to see the original fob first. He handed it over and I popped it open. The CR2025 inside was original -- still the factory cell from whenever the car was built. Voltage tested low, not dead, just soft enough to cause exactly the kind of intermittent behavior he'd been dealing with.
I swapped in a fresh CR2025, seated it correctly, and closed the fob back up. Walked the car. Both door handles responded. Push-to-start picked up the fob immediately. Every button on the four-button fob tested clean.
The online fob he'd ordered was still in the box. I told him to hold onto it as a spare and that I could program it as an add-a-key while I was already there. He said yes. That part took longer than the battery fix, maybe twenty minutes total for both, because adding a second key to the system requires the diagnostic step even when you have a working key present.
He got two working fobs out of the visit. The battery was the culprit the whole time, but having a programmed spare is never a bad idea on a vehicle this age.
