There's a thrift store near the San Luis Rey neighborhood in Oceanside, one of those places that always has something going on out front. A store manager called me on a Tuesday afternoon with a situation that wasn't really about the key at first.
She had stepped out to her 2019 Mazda CX-9 during a break. Fob in her bag, same as always. Walked up to the driver door, grabbed the handle, nothing. No click, no unlock. She pulled out the fob and started pressing buttons. Still nothing. Then the dash lit up with a key-not-detected warning when she finally got inside using the mechanical backup blade tucked inside the fob.
She thought the whole system was gone.
I got there and the first thing I did was check the fob battery. CR2025, and it was reading low enough that the smart functions were dropping out even though the fob still had enough juice to do the basic transponder handshake for starting. That's a real thing with this generation. The remote functions die before the start function does, so people assume the car starts fine and the fob must be okay. It's not a reliable way to judge battery health on these.
Swapped the CR2025, cleaned the contacts inside the fob housing, and walked every function: both front door handles for touch-unlock, the lock button, the liftgate release, and the start button. Everything came back clean.
She asked if I thought she needed a new fob. I told her honestly, not today. The fob shell was in good shape and the electronics were reading correctly on my scanner. If it acts up again after a fresh battery, then we talk about replacement and programming. But that wasn't the day for it.
She was back inside with a customer waiting on a piece of furniture within about twenty minutes of my arrival. Dealer would have told her to bring it in and leave it for a diagnosis. That wasn't an option for her afternoon.
