2020 Mazda CX-9 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
I got a call from a woman in Fairbanks Ranch on a Tuesday evening. She'd just gotten home, walked inside, and realized she only had one working fob for her 2020 CX-9. Her backup had been sitting in a drawer for months and when she tried it, nothing. No lock response, no unlock, nothing from the car.
She'd looked me up before calling. That part came out right away. She said she'd checked the license, read through the site, and wanted to know if I was actually coming from a legitimate operation before someone she didn't know showed up at her house. That's a fair ask, and I told her exactly what she'd find if she kept looking.
I got out there within the hour. The backup fob had a dead battery, which we handled first. Swapped in a fresh CR2025, seated it correctly, and the fob woke right up. But it still wasn't pairing cleanly with the vehicle, and after running a quick check I could see the fob hadn't been properly registered in the system. It was a spare that had never been through the enrollment process, just sitting in a drawer assuming it would work.
Programming a second key on the 2020 CX-9 requires diagnostic equipment. There's no ignition-cycle trick for smart keys. I connected up, ran through the registration process with the primary fob present, confirmed both keys were recognized, and walked every function before I packed up. Locks, start, the whole check.
The dealer had quoted her a wait of several days for an appointment plus the programming fee. We handled it in her driveway the same night she called. She didn't say much when it was done. Just asked me to double-check the second fob one more time, which I did.
