Your 2018 Mazda CX-9 uses a Smart Key. On the push-to-start models, that means a fob housing with 4 buttons, a CR2025 battery powering the wireless signal, and an emergency metal blade tucked inside for backup entry. There's also a transponder chip the car needs to detect before the engine will start.
A stay-at-home dad at his duplex driveway near Otay Mesa West had a CX-9 with a cracked smart fob. The housing had split from being dropped on the concrete and the buttons were barely attached. He paid $241 for the shell swap and battery. Dealer wanted $419 to replace the entire fob when only the plastic was broken.
