Does my 2011 Nissan Leaf smart key have a hidden emergency blade inside it?

It does. There's a small release on the fob body. Press it, slide the blade out, and you have a metal key that fits the driver's door cylinder. On the Leaf, the key slot on the door handle is usually behind a small cover that pops off. A lot of owners have never touched it and don't know it's there.

If the fob battery dies completely and you're already inside the car, hold the fob body directly against the start button and press the brake. The car reads a passive signal from the fob at close range and will still start. That backup method works even when the battery is fully dead. Two things worth knowing before you need them.

My 2011 Leaf shows a key warning on the dash but the fob battery is new. What else could cause that?

A fresh battery fixes most of these, but not all of them. A few other things come up on the Leaf specifically.

The CR2032 contact points inside the fob can develop a thin layer of oxidation, especially in coastal areas like Carlsbad where salt air is part of daily life. The battery tests fine but the connection isn't clean. Opening the fob and wiping the contacts takes thirty seconds and sometimes that's the whole fix.

Beyond that, if the warning is intermittent and the fob works fine from close range but drops out at distance, that points toward the fob antenna or internal fob components rather than the battery. And if the warning shows up consistently regardless of battery condition, the vehicle's receiver side, the antenna loop or the body control module, is worth looking at. That's a diagnostic visit, not a fob swap.

The charge port button on my Leaf fob stopped working but lock and unlock still function. Is the fob bad?

This one comes up on Leaf forums more than you'd expect. The charge port button is a function specific to how the Leaf fob is programmed, not just a hardware button. If lock and unlock work normally, the fob itself is communicating with the car. The issue is usually either a worn button contact inside the fob body or a programming gap specific to that charge port function.

Worth having the fob inspected before assuming it needs full replacement. Sometimes it's a worn internal contact that can be addressed without buying a new fob. If the fob does need replacement, make sure the new one is Leaf-specific. A standard Nissan Intelligent Key blank will pair to the immobilizer but the charge port function won't be there.
