I got a call out to The Cays in Coronado on a Sunday morning. The guy had already been burned once. A different locksmith had come out, charged him full price for a replacement Leaf fob, and left him with a car that would crank, fire for about two seconds, and then shut itself right back down. The other tech told him it was a module problem and disappeared.
It was not a module problem.
When I got there, the car behaved exactly the way a partially registered key behaves. The vehicle's immobilizer had accepted just enough of the programming to allow the starter to engage, but the key was never fully written to permanent memory. So the engine started and the immobilizer killed it. Two seconds, every time. Classic incomplete registration.
I verified the mechanical cut on the insert key first. That was fine. Then I connected through the OBD port, cleared out the failed key data from the previous attempt, and ran a clean immobilizer learn with the full security handshake and timed countdown intact. No rushing it. The system has a built-in timer that exists for a reason, and if you cut corners on that step, you get exactly what this guy had already paid for once.
When the registration confirmed, I walked him through every button on the fob. Lock, unlock, panic, remote start, and the charge port release. All five working. Start with no cutoff. I turned the screen toward him so he could see the confirmed registration status himself.
He had already paid the first locksmith, and I could not undo that. What I could do was finish the job correctly. He told me the dealer quote was what pushed him toward a mobile locksmith in the first place. My price was a fraction of that, even as a second call.
