2017 Nissan Leaf
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How much more does all-keys-lost cost compared to just adding a spare?

On the 2017 Leaf's Intelligent Key system, adding a spare while you still have one working fob is a relatively clean job: the new fob gets registered through the diagnostic port alongside the existing one, and you are done. All-keys-lost is a different situation. When zero registered fobs remain, the immobilizer has to be reset before any new key can be enrolled. That process takes longer, requires additional steps, and costs more, sometimes noticeably more depending on the circumstances.

Q: Are aftermarket fobs for the 2017 Leaf worth it or will they cause problems?

It is a gamble. Some Leaf owners on forums have had workable results with aftermarket fobs, and others have ended up buying twice because the first one would not program correctly or the charge port button did not respond reliably. The fob for this vehicle is not a standard five-button Nissan unit you can pull from a different model, so sourcing matters. What we carry is OEM-spec, tested for this vehicle.

Q: My 2017 Leaf starts fine but the fob range seems really short all of a sudden. Is the fob dying?

Short range before a full failure is one of the most common patterns Leaf owners describe before the fob stops working entirely. Nine times out of ten it is the CR2032 on its way out. Swap it, make sure it seats flat against both contacts, and retest. If range stays short after a fresh battery with confirmed good contact, the fob's internal antenna or circuit board may be the issue.

Q: The charge port button on my Leaf fob stopped working but lock and unlock still work fine. What is going on?

This comes up on Leaf forums enough that it is worth its own answer. The charge port release button on the fob operates independently from the lock and unlock buttons, and Leaf owners report cases where that specific button fails while the rest of the fob works normally. Sometimes it is a worn contact pad inside the fob. Sometimes it is a fob that took a drop and the internal contact shifted.

2017 Nissan Leaf Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was running a job near North Broadway in Escondido when I got a call from a guy who said his 2017 Leaf had been sitting in a parking lot for two days.

He had one fob and it had stopped being recognized. The dash was showing a key-not-detected warning consistently, not intermittently. He had already swapped the CR2032 himself. Still nothing. He figured he was looking at a tow to the dealer and a multi-day wait.

When I got to him, I asked him to show me how he had replaced the battery. He had done it right, or so it looked. I popped the fob open myself and found the issue immediately: the positive contact tab had a slight outward bow from being pried with a flathead instead of a proper tool. The new CR2032 was sitting in there but barely making contact. I gently reset the tab, reseated the battery, and put the fob back together.

Key recognized. Every button working, including the charge port release. He had the car back in about ten minutes from when I pulled up.

Before I left I walked him through what to watch for if the contact issue comes back and talked him through getting a spare programmed so he would not be stranded again. That part, making a spare while a working key is still in hand, is always the cheaper and faster road compared to all-keys-lost later.

He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a wait of several days just to get an appointment. I was there the same afternoon he called.

Nissan Leaf Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to replace a key for my 2017 Nissan Leaf?▼

Call a mobile locksmith before you call the dealer. Nissan dealers typically bundle the fob, programming labor, and any diagnostic time into one invoice that adds up fast, and you usually wait days for an appointment. With EZ Car Keyz you get the fob sourced, programmed, and tested on site in one visit for a fraction of what they wanted. No tow, no appointment backlog, no separate line items for every step. Call for current pricing.
