I was running a job near North Broadway in Escondido when I got a call from a guy who said his 2017 Leaf had been sitting in a parking lot for two days.
He had one fob and it had stopped being recognized. The dash was showing a key-not-detected warning consistently, not intermittently. He had already swapped the CR2032 himself. Still nothing. He figured he was looking at a tow to the dealer and a multi-day wait.
When I got to him, I asked him to show me how he had replaced the battery. He had done it right, or so it looked. I popped the fob open myself and found the issue immediately: the positive contact tab had a slight outward bow from being pried with a flathead instead of a proper tool. The new CR2032 was sitting in there but barely making contact. I gently reset the tab, reseated the battery, and put the fob back together.
Key recognized. Every button working, including the charge port release. He had the car back in about ten minutes from when I pulled up.
Before I left I walked him through what to watch for if the contact issue comes back and talked him through getting a spare programmed so he would not be stranded again. That part, making a spare while a working key is still in hand, is always the cheaper and faster road compared to all-keys-lost later.
He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a wait of several days just to get an appointment. I was there the same afternoon he called.
