She had one key, always meant to get a second, and that single fob had finally given up. The housing had cracked along the seam and the internal blade had snapped when she pulled it from her pocket. The fob was in two pieces and the car was sitting there not detecting anything.

That broken fob was actually good news, in a way. When a key physically breaks, people assume the whole job becomes an all-keys-lost situation, which takes longer and costs more. But a cracked shell does not automatically kill the transponder inside. I popped what was left of the housing apart carefully and confirmed the chip was still intact. Because that component was readable, I could recover the pairing data directly, which meant I did not have to run the full all-keys-lost reset procedure. That saved real time.

I cut two fresh key blades to her vehicle, built two new fobs using new shells, transferred the recovered data, programmed both fobs to the car, and walked every button on both keys plus the blade function before I packed up. She went from zero working keys to two in about 40 minutes, right there in the carport.

She asked what the dealer would have said. I told her honestly: the dealer would have seen one key present, probably pushed toward an all-keys-lost procedure anyway since she couldn't demonstrate the broken fob working, and the appointment alone would have been a day's wait. She saved a good chunk and didn't have to get the car towed anywhere.
