Harbison Canyon is not where you expect to get a mobile key call at midday on a weekday. It's quiet out there, mostly rural, and people don't always have great signal. So when the call came in from a family parked near one of the trailheads off the canyon road, I already knew what kind of job it was going to be before they finished explaining.
They had a 2021 Nissan Leaf and zero working keys. Not one. The fob was gone, they weren't sure exactly when or where, and they'd already been told by someone at a dealership over the phone that all-keys-lost on a push-button Leaf was dealer-only and would require a tow.
I get that answer a lot. It's not accurate.
Push-button all-keys-lost is more involved than a standard add-a-key, that part is true. There's no ignition cylinder to turn, no onboard relearn sequence to walk through. The immobilizer has to be accessed properly, old key data has to be cleared, and new fobs have to be enrolled through the diagnostic port. If you skip any of that, the new key won't start the car. The system is doing exactly what it was designed to do.
I pulled up next to the Leaf, got the diagnostic equipment set up, backed up the existing immobilizer data, then ran the all-keys-lost sequence. New fob programmed, tested at the door handles, tested at the push button, tested on lock and unlock. Car started clean.
The family had been sitting out there for a couple of hours working through their options. The tow quote they'd gotten was going to add real money on top of whatever the dealer was going to charge. They saved a good chunk going the mobile route instead, and they drove home from Harbison Canyon the same afternoon.
All-keys-lost on a smart key Leaf is not a dealer-only job. It's a job that requires the right tools and someone who knows the sequence. That's a different thing entirely.
