1996 Nissan Pathfinder Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Out in Fairbanks Ranch, in Rancho Santa Fe, I got a call from someone who had locked their only key inside their 1996 Pathfinder. Not in the ignition, not visible on the seat. Somewhere in the back, under a jacket, and the doors were locked tight.
They had already called a tow company. The tow company told them they could bring it to a dealer. The dealer was closed.
I asked them to check the VIN on the windshield and have their ID ready for verification. They had both. I was already pulling my slim jim tools before I got off the phone.
When I got there, the key was exactly where they thought, buried in the cargo area. Getting in without damage on one of these is a patience job. The door seals on a 96 are firm, the linkage rods sit differently than on newer trucks, and you have to feel your way through it rather than rush it. Took a few minutes of careful work at the door frame, then the lock rod moved and the button came up.
That was it. No cutting, no programming, no dealer trip. They canceled the tow, drove home, and later called to get a spare cut so this does not happen again. Smart move on the spare. On a vehicle this age, you really want a backup.
