Out in Fairbanks Ranch, in Rancho Santa Fe, I got a call from someone who had locked their only key inside their 1996 Pathfinder. Not in the ignition, not visible on the seat. Somewhere in the back, under a jacket, and the doors were locked tight.

The door seals on a 96 are firm, the linkage rods sit differently than on newer trucks, and you have to feel your way through it rather than rush it. Took a few minutes of careful work at the door frame, then the lock rod moved and the button came up.
That was it. No cutting, no programming, no dealer trip. They canceled the tow, drove home, and later called to get a spare cut so this does not happen again. Smart move on the spare. On a vehicle this age, you really want a backup.
