2006 Nissan Pathfinder Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A woman in Harbison Canyon called me on a Tuesday morning. She had a 2006 Nissan Pathfinder that she'd bought used a couple years back, came with one key, and she'd been meaning to get a spare ever since. She never did.
The housing on her remote-head-key had cracked along the seam - that spot right where the blade folds out. She'd been babying it for weeks, keeping the two halves pressed together when she turned the ignition. Then the blade snapped clean at the base when she pulled it out of her jacket pocket. One piece stayed in the ignition. The other stayed in her hand. The car wasn't going anywhere.
I drove out to Alpine and found her waiting in the carport. The key was in two main pieces, plus a few fragments of shell. The chip inside the housing was still intact, which mattered. I was able to pull the transponder data off it directly rather than going the all-keys-lost route, which is a longer process with a timed relearn sequence built into the vehicle's security system.
I decoded her lock cylinder, cut two new blades, and programmed two fresh remote-head-key units on site. Before I left, I walked both keys through the full check - lock, unlock, and ignition start on each one. Both worked clean.
She went from no working key to two spares in about 40 minutes. She mentioned the dealer had quoted her a number she wasn't comfortable with for a single key, no mention of a second one. She got two for way less than what they wanted for one.
If your key is cracked but still in one piece, that's actually the better time to call. It's easier, faster, and less expensive than waiting for it to fully fail.
