There's a parking structure near the CSUSM campus that I've been to more times than I can count. Students, staff, the occasional faculty member who locked themselves out. This one was a little different.
A guy reached me through a referral. He was parked in the lot off Grand Avenue, near the edge of the CSUSM Area, and his 2018 Pathfinder had been sitting there since the night before. He'd gotten a key-not-detected warning on the dash, figured the fob battery was dead, swapped it himself with a fresh CR2032, and the warning was gone but the vehicle still wouldn't start. He'd been going back and forth with the dealer all morning. They wanted the car towed in before they'd even look at it.
When I got there, I pulled the fob apart first. The battery he installed was seated fine. The contacts were clean. I had him try the backup start procedure, holding the fob directly to the start button, which bypasses the antenna and reads the transponder directly. The engine turned over.
That told me what I needed to know. The fob itself was intact. The issue was antenna range, not the key's programming or the transponder. One of the interior antennas that picks up the smart key signal had gone weak, so normal pocket range wasn't cutting it anymore, but up close it worked fine.
We talked through the options. He could address the antenna separately, or have a second fob programmed as a backup while he sorted it. He went with the backup fob, which I programmed on site in about 25 minutes using professional diagnostic equipment connected to the OBD port.
He drove out of that lot under his own power. The dealer quote, just for the fob and programming without any diagnostic work, was already well above what he paid me total. He did the math out loud in the parking structure and I just let him get there on his own.
