I got a call from San Ysidro one evening, right in the Border Area near one of the busiest crossings in the country. A couple, clearly road-tripping based on the packed SUV, had been stranded at their motel since midday. Their 2017 Pathfinder was their only vehicle, and the single fob they had was not being recognized by the car at all. No backup key. So the pairing itself had gone soft, not the battery alone.
I connected through the OBD port, pulled up the vehicle security system, and registered a new smart key on site. Cut the emergency insert blade to match the vehicle, verified all five buttons, tested the door handles, and had them do a full walk-around with me so they knew exactly what was working before I packed up.
The whole job was done before the motel restaurant closed for the night. They were back on the road the next morning. The dealer quote and the tow never came up again.
