I got a call from a guy in Shadowridge, over near the shopping center off Melrose. He had a 2013 Pathfinder that was giving him a key-not-detected warning on the dash. He'd already put in a new CR2032, so he figured the fob was done and started calling around for a replacement.
He found out the dealer wanted him to tow the vehicle in. No working key, no driving it there, and towing was going to run on top of everything else. He wasn't happy about it.
When I got there, I asked him how he swapped the battery. He showed me. He'd been prying the fob open with a flathead, which is a pretty normal move, but the battery clip had taken a small bend from the edge of the screwdriver. The new CR2032 was sitting in there but not making full contact.
I opened the fob properly on the hood of my van, straightened the clip, reseated the battery, and closed it back up clean. Walked every function: door handles, start button, the lock and unlock buttons, the emergency blade in the cylinder. Everything was alive.
He didn't need a new fob. He didn't need a tow. He was back on his way in under twenty minutes, and what he paid me was a fraction of what the dealer had in mind just to get the car into their bay.
The part that sticks with me is the battery clip. It's such a small thing. But a bent clip reads exactly like a dead fob if you're not looking for it.
