A guy in North El Cajon called me on a Tuesday afternoon. He had just gotten back from a hardware store with a freshly cut key for his 2001 Pathfinder. It turned in the ignition, the engine cranked, fired up for a second, then died. He tried it four more times before he figured something was wrong beyond a bad cut.

I came out to his driveway in North El Cajon with the right blank and my programming equipment. Cut the new key blade to match his lock, then ran the transponder programming procedure to register the chip to his immobilizer. Took under an hour start to finish.

He had already paid the hardware store for the bad key. His total with me was still well under what the dealer quoted him when he called that morning just to check. He kept the uncut hardware store key as a reminder, he said.
