There is a AutoZone off Otay Mesa Road, and a guy was parked there when I pulled up. He had called me after a rough experience with a locksmith he found through a low-bid ad.
He told me the story while I was still getting my gear out. He had searched for a locksmith, clicked the first result, and got a phone quote that sounded fine. The tech showed up, looked at the car for about thirty seconds, and started adding charges. By the time he was done, the bill was nearly ten times the original quote. The fob the guy left behind barely worked, and the engine start was cutting out intermittently.
His 2004 Matrix had two separate problems. The fob, a 3-button unit, had been programmed sloppily and was only triggering one of the three functions reliably. The transponder side was also reading inconsistently, which explained the intermittent no-start. Those are not the same repair and they do not get fixed the same way.
I reprogrammed the fob correctly and addressed the transponder enrollment so the immobilizer was getting a clean read every time. Tested all three buttons. Tested the start cycle several times. Everything came back solid.
He asked me how to tell a legitimate locksmith from a bait-and-switch operation before we wrapped up. I walked him through it: California requires mobile locksmiths to carry a BSIS license, which is issued by the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services. My number is LCO#6792. You can look it up on the state website before anyone touches your car. Background check, insurance, registered business. If a tech shows up and cannot give you a license number on the spot, that is your answer.
The dealer had quoted him a number that made him wince. My price was a fraction of that, and the work was done in the parking lot before he had to drive anywhere.
