I got a call near Libby Lake, over by the Oceanside library off the main stretch. The guy had already paid another locksmith to replace his key on his 2005 Toyota Matrix. Engine would crank, fire up for a second, then cut out. Every time. The first locksmith told him the immobilizer module was bad and walked away.
He was frustrated in a quiet way. Not yelling, just done with the whole situation.
I sat with it before I touched anything. The symptom, starts and immediately stalls, is almost always the immobilizer not fully accepting the key. It's not usually a failed module. The module was reading fine. What had happened was the previous programmer rushed the security handshake. Toyota's immobilizer registration has a seed-and-key calculation step with a timed sequence built in. If you bail early or the tool drops the connection mid-process, the key can write to a temporary state that looks complete on screen but doesn't commit to permanent memory. Next ignition cycle, the module checks again, doesn't find a confirmed registration, and kills fuel.
I cleared the partial registration, ran the full sequence through the OBD port with the right timing, and watched the confirmation come through showing the key permanently stored. Turned the ignition. It started clean and stayed running.
He watched the whole thing on the tool screen, which I appreciated because it meant he could see the difference between a completed job and an attempted one.
He'd already spent money on the first locksmith. I can't fix that. What I could do was get him running in Libby Lake without another trip to the dealer, for a fraction of what that would have cost.
