He was pulled over on the shoulder near Grossmont Area in La Mesa, not by choice. The key had snapped clean in the ignition of his 2009 Toyota Matrix -- half the blade still seated in the cylinder, half in his hand. When I got there, the fragment was in deep but the wafers were intact. I used a Lishi tool sized for this Toyota keyway to work around the stuck piece and extract it without touching the wafers. Once it was out, I decoded the cylinder right there from the wafer positions, cut a fresh blade to match, and tested it in the door and ignition before I put anything away.
The lock worked the same as it did the day he bought the car. No new cylinder, no drilling, no tow to a shop. He kept looking at the ignition like he was waiting for something to go wrong.
It didn't. The other locksmith's plan would have cost him considerably more and left him with a replaced cylinder instead of his original. Non-destructive is always the first call on these.
