What is the cheapest way to replace a key for a 2010 Toyota Matrix?

A hardware store copy will be cut correctly but won't have the chip, so it'll open the doors but the car won't start, or it'll start and stall. This can happen with a worn chip, a key that was duplicated without a proper transponder, or a chip that has lost sync.

Before assuming the worst, check whether the car starts and stays running with a different key if you have one. If a second key starts fine and yours doesn't, the chip in your key is the issue, not the car. I can verify the chip on site and either re-cut a replacement or sort out what's actually going on.

I got a key cut at a hardware store and it opens the door but won't start the car. What happened?

The cut is right but the chip is missing. Hardware stores and most big-box key kiosks cut the blade correctly but use a plain, non-transponder blank. The 2010 Matrix needs a chip in the key head for the car to start. The lock doesn't care about the chip, so the door works fine. The ignition does, so the car won't run. You need a proper transponder blank cut and programmed to your vehicle. That hardware store key is usable as a door key in a pinch, but it won't get you anywhere.
