2013 Toyota Matrix
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How much more does all-keys-lost cost compared to adding a spare?

More involved, and yes, it costs more. When you have a working key, adding a spare is a shorter job because the existing key gives the system a trust anchor. All-keys-lost means starting the immobilizer enrollment from scratch with no reference key in memory. It takes longer and requires the right diagnostic equipment to pull it off in the field. The practical advice I give every Matrix owner: get a spare cut and programmed while you still have the original.

Q: Are aftermarket keys cheaper for the Matrix, and will they actually work?

Aftermarket shells and blades, sure. But the transponder chip inside the key head is where compatibility gets real. The Matrix immobilizer is specific about what it will and won't enroll. Some cheap aftermarket keys sourced online carry transponder chips that look right on the listing but don't register correctly, and you won't know until programming fails.

Q: My 2013 Matrix starts fine but the remote buttons on the key stopped working. Do I need a whole new key?

Start with the battery. The remote head key runs on a CR2016, and a dead cell is the most common reason the lock, unlock, and trunk buttons go silent while the car still starts normally. The transponder that talks to the ignition system is passive and doesn't need the battery at all, which is why starting works fine even when the remote is completely dead. Pop the key open, swap in a fresh CR2016, and test all four buttons.

Q: Can I program a second 2013 Matrix remote head key myself at home?

For the remote button side, some Toyota remote head key setups from this era have an onboard add-a-key sequence you can attempt with a working key in hand. Whether it works depends on how the vehicle's security system is configured and whether you already have a working programmed key to initiate the sequence. The transponder side is a different story. If the new key's chip isn't enrolled, the car will crank and immediately stall, or won't start at all.

2013 Toyota Matrix Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Got a call from someone over near the Encanto Border side of Lemon Grove, just outside the neighborhood proper. He'd had his 2013 Matrix for years and finally lost his last working key. Not misplaced. Gone. He still had the car but zero keys, and the ignition cylinder was just sitting there with nothing to turn it.

He'd already called the dealer. They told him he'd need to tow it in, and the wait was days out. He found me online that same afternoon.

With a remote head key and all keys lost, the job has two layers. I need to cut a replacement blade to the vehicle, and I need to enroll the new key's transponder into the immobilizer from scratch because there are no existing keys in memory to use as a reference. The remote buttons get programmed at the same time. It's tool-dependent work, not guesswork.

I pulled up to his place, verified the vehicle, and got to work. Cut the blade on site, ran the enrollment sequence through the diagnostic port, confirmed the transponder was recognized, then walked every button on the head to make sure the remote side was fully paired.

He turned the key himself. Car started. He tested the lock and unlock buttons standing in his driveway like he was making sure it was real.

He paid a fraction of what the dealer quoted, didn't tow anything, and was driving the same day he called. The dealer route would have cost him more money and two days he didn't have.

Toyota Matrix Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to replace my 2013 Matrix key?▼

Call a mobile locksmith before you call the dealer. The 2013 Matrix uses a remote head key, which means blade cutting, transponder programming, and remote pairing all happen in one visit. Dealers bundle those into separate line items and the total reflects it. With EZ Car Keyz, you get the whole job done on site, at your location in Lemon Grove, for way less than the dealer route. No tow, no appointment days out, no surprises. Call for current pricing.
