I got a call from a guy down in South Oceanside, close to the strand. He had been at the beach, came back to his 2011 Matrix in the parking area, and his only key was gone. Checked his bag, checked his pockets, retraced his steps in the sand for a good stretch. Nothing.
He called me from the lot. Car locked, no key, no spare back home, and no idea what to do next.
I drove out to him. The first thing I did was decode the lock mechanically, reading the wafer positions inside the cylinder to get the exact cut the blade needed. Once I had that, I cut a new blade to match. That part alone gets the door open and the ignition turning.
The second part is the programming side. The 2011 Matrix uses a transponder chip in the key head that has to be registered to the immobilizer before the engine will run. On an all-keys-lost job, the old key entries get cleared and the new key gets enrolled. I connected through the OBD port, ran the reset sequence, and registered the new remote head key. Then I tested every button on the fob and started the car.
He watched the whole thing from about three feet away. When it started, he just looked at it for a second like he expected something else to happen.
Total time in the lot was right around 50 minutes. The dealer had quoted him something in the multi-hundred dollar range just to get started, and that was before tow fees and wait time. He drove home.
