I was parked off Wintergardens Boulevard when the call came in. Guy in Winter Gardens, Lakeside, standing next to his 2014 Venza in his own driveway. He had already called someone else first.
He told me the story while I was still pulling up. A locksmith from one of those big-ad Google listings had come out, quoted him one price on the phone, and by the time the work was done the bill was three times that. The key that came back barely functioned. Two buttons worked. Engine start was intermittent, meaning some mornings it would take three or four tries before the immobilizer cleared and the car would run. The remote head key looked like the right part but clearly had not been programmed correctly.
He found me through Google Guaranteed and asked before I touched anything: how do I know you are who you say you are? Fair question. I gave him my BSIS license number on the spot. That is California's Bureau of Security and Investigative Services. It means background check, insurance, registered business address, all of it on file with the state. He pulled it up on his phone while I set up. That is exactly what someone should do.
I went through the fob first. The cell was a CR2032 crammed into a tray built for a CR2016. Thinner tray, fatter battery, bent contact. That alone was causing the weak button response. Swapped the correct CR2016, reseated the contact, and tested range. Better, but the engine start was still inconsistent, which told me the transponder side had not been written correctly by whoever had been there before.
Programmed the remote head key properly using the right equipment, walked every button, confirmed clean start four times in a row, and checked that the key-not-detected warning was gone from the dash.
He did not need a new fob. He needed the job done right the first time. That is a different thing, and it is the thing I showed up to do.
