A guy in Fletcher Cove called me on a Sunday evening. He had been doing beach work most of the day and came back to his 1998 Volkswagen Jetta in the lot near Fletcher Cove Park to find the remote completely dead.
Door buttons, nothing. Lock, nothing. He had been using the remote entry for so long he had genuinely forgotten the blade folded out of the fob. He thought he was locked out with no way in.
When I pulled up he was standing next to the car looking at the fob like it had personally wronged him. I showed him the blade release, popped it open, and had the door unlocked in about ten seconds. He laughed at himself a little.
The remote itself was the real job. CR2032 was fully depleted, which on these late-90s VW remotes means the fob loses its sync with the car receiver after enough dead time. Swapped the battery, then did a resync on site. The remote came right back: locks, unlocks, all four buttons working cleanly.
He mentioned he had almost called a tow company the night before when the buttons first started getting weak, but talked himself out of it. Glad he did. We were done in the parking lot in about twenty minutes, and he paid a fraction of what a tow plus dealer visit would have run him. The Jetta drove out fine.
