Moving day does not pause for a missing key. A couple in the Lake Poway Area had rented a PODS unit off Espola Road and were loading up for a household merge early on a weekday morning. Somewhere in the middle of hauling boxes, the only key to their 2020 Jetta disappeared. Not lost on the ground. Lost inside a container that was already half packed and scheduled for pickup by noon.
Unpacking to find it was not an option. Neither was waiting two days for a dealer appointment.
I was on site within the hour. The Jetta takes a transponder key, so the job had two parts: cutting a replacement blade to match the door and ignition, and then programming the transponder chip through the OBD port so the immobilizer would accept it as a valid key. I decoded the lock mechanically and cut the blade on my portable machine right there in the lot. Then I connected my VW-capable diagnostic tool and ran the add-a-key procedure.
One thing I told them before I left: if the original key turns up during unpacking, it will still work. Add-a-key on this system registers the new key without wiping out existing ones. They were back to loading in under 45 minutes, well ahead of the noon pickup.
The dealer would have needed the car towed in, then a day or two wait for a technician slot. That was not going to work for a noon deadline at a storage lot.
