I got the call from a parking lot just off the main strip in Downtown Lemon Grove. A guy in a 2010 Jetta had stopped for gas, locked up while he ran inside, came back out, and the fob did nothing.
Dead. He tried the manual blade insert to get in, which worked fine, but when he went to start it the engine cranked and immediately died. That pattern right there told me most of what I needed to know before I even pulled up.
He was a traveling musician with a tight schedule and a trunk full of gear. Not the night for a tow.
When I got there I pulled the fob apart on the hood. The CR2032 had some juice left but the remote circuit board had a hairline crack near one of the button contacts, the kind you only see when you angle it under a light. That explained the dead remote. The no-start after cranking pointed to the transponder side losing its pairing, which can happen when a cracked board lets the chip float slightly out of position during normal use. It is more common on these flip keys than people realize because the hinge mechanism puts mechanical stress on the board every single time you open it.
I built a replacement key from a fresh blank, transferred the necessary data using my programming equipment, cut the blade to match the vehicle, and ran through every function: lock, unlock, trunk release, and the fourth button, then confirmed a clean start with no stall.
He was back on the road in well under an hour. When he mentioned what the dealer would have quoted him just for the appointment, I just nodded. Dealer hours also don't exist at 8pm on a Wednesday.
