Out near the Encanto Border side of Lemon Grove, three roommates were sharing one 2004 Volkswagen Jetta between them. Errands, commutes, grocery runs, all coordinated by a group text thread that was basically just "who has the key right now." On these fourth-generation Jettas, the immobilizer module holds the key authorization data, and when you're adding to an existing set of enrolled keys you want that backup in case anything goes sideways mid-process. It's a few extra minutes that protect everyone. Then I programmed the new flip key through the OBD port alongside the two they already had, and tested all three back to back: start, remote lock, remote unlock, run through every button.

All three worked. I handed off the new key, showed them how to swap the CR2032 down the road when the remote range starts dropping, and that was it.

The group text about the key went quiet the same day. They told me that was worth it by itself.
