Sunday morning in De Luz, out past the avocado groves where cell signal does what it wants and the nearest VW dealer might as well be on the moon.
A vintage reseller had driven out to a flea market in Fallbrook to set up her booth. She got there early, unloaded everything, and when she went back to lock the car the remote did nothing. Dead buttons, no response. She tried the flip blade in the door and it turned, so at least she could lock up manually. But she had a full day ahead of her and needed the car working.
The VW dealer was closed. She called their roadside line and was told they could arrange a tow but could not help with key replacement. She called me instead.
I got out there in about 40 minutes. First thing I did was crack open the fob and test the CR2032. It was reading low but not fully dead, which is actually the trickier situation because the fob looks like it should work. Marginal voltage will kill the remote signal while still technically showing a charge on a basic meter.
I swapped the battery, reseated everything, and retested the remote range. Buttons came back. Then I verified the transponder was still being recognized at the ignition, because a damaged chip can hide behind a dead-battery symptom. Car started clean, held idle, no warning lights. Transponder was fine.
After that I walked the whole fob: lock, unlock, trunk release, and a range check from across the lot. She was good to go before the first customers showed up.
She sold vintage all day and drove home that evening. The dealer would have been a Monday appointment at the earliest, plus whatever wait they quoted for the visit itself.
