Sunday morning in De Luz, out past the avocado groves where cell signal does what it wants and the nearest VW dealer might as well be on the moon.

A vintage reseller had driven out to a flea market in Fallbrook to set up her booth. She got there early, unloaded everything, and when she went back to lock the car the remote did nothing. After that I walked the whole fob: lock, unlock, trunk release, and a range check from across the lot. She was good to go before the first customers showed up.

She sold vintage all day and drove home that evening. The dealer would have been a Monday appointment at the earliest, plus whatever wait they quoted for the visit itself.
