Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on Volkswagen vehicles?

Cheap keys from online marketplaces are a known problem on this generation. Locksmiths and VW techs on forums have documented cases where the fob shell or circuit board arrived with incomplete or mismatched electronics, and the key either won't program or programs and then drops out after a few weeks. Some VW dealers won't touch a key that didn't come through them, which puts the owner in a bad spot.

How long will a replacement flip key last on a 2015 Jetta?

Years, with normal use and a battery swap when it's due. The transponder chip and remote electronics hold up well. What wears out first on the flip key design is mechanical: the roll pin holding the blade can loosen, and the plastic housing - especially the keyring loop - can crack if it takes any abuse.

The good news is that shell wear doesn't mean starting over. As long as the internal electronics are intact, the chip and circuit board can be transferred to a fresh housing without reprogramming. Jetta owners on VW forums mention doing exactly this to extend the life of a key that was otherwise still working fine.

CR2032 battery. Swap it when remote range starts dropping off. Don't wait until the fob goes fully unresponsive.

What if the new key stops working after a few weeks?

This matters more than people realize on the 2015 Jetta. The immobilizer on this generation is not forgiving of sloppy programming. VW locksmiths on forums have documented cases where a key was registered with the wrong tool or an incomplete sequence, appeared to work, then dropped out within days. We test every function before we leave - start, remote lock, remote unlock, trunk release - because a key that half-works isn't done.

Maybe, but it depends on what you bought. The fob has to match the factory specifications for this vehicle - the right remote frequency, the right transponder chip, the correct number of buttons. If it doesn't match, programming won't take, and no amount of tool time will change that.

This comes up constantly in VW owner forums. Someone orders a fob that looks right in the photos, brings it to a locksmith or dealer, and finds out the internals don't match. Sometimes it programs but the remote functions don't work. Sometimes it won't enroll at all.

Bring it along when you call. I'll look at it and tell you upfront whether it's usable. If it's not, I carry verified stock that will work.

My 2015 Jetta starts fine but the remote buttons stopped working. Do I need a full key replacement?

Not necessarily. If the key starts the car, the transponder is still communicating with the immobilizer. That's the harder part to replace. Dead remote buttons on a flip key are usually one of three things: a drained CR2032, a cracked circuit board trace from the key being dropped or sat on, or a worn contact under one of the buttons.

Swap the battery first. If the range comes back but one button is still dead, that's likely a contact or board issue. At that point a shell and board swap often costs less than a full new key with programming. Worth a call before you assume the whole thing needs to go.
