You can buy the shell and blade online, but be careful. The 2012 Jetta flip key requires both a cut blade and a correctly equipped transponder chip inside the housing. A lot of keys sold online are remote-only shells with no chip, or they carry a chip that doesn't match what the vehicle security system expects. If the chip type is wrong, the car will crank and immediately stall, and no amount of reprogramming fixes that because the issue is the hardware, not the pairing.

Start with the CR2032 battery. A dead cell kills the remote side completely while the transponder keeps doing its job. If a fresh battery doesn't bring the buttons back, the remote may have lost its pairing to the car, which happens after a battery swap goes wrong or the car's battery is disconnected. That's a reprogramming job, not a new key. Worst case, the remote circuit itself has failed, and the fix is a new key programmed on site.
