2017 Volkswagen Jetta Remote Flip Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Out in Rancho Santa Fe, at The Crosby, a guy called me on a weekday evening after stopping for gas. His 2017 Jetta would not restart. The flip key went into the ignition, turned, and nothing happened. No crank, no start. The dash was showing a key-not-detected warning even with the key physically in the cylinder.
He had already tried the key twice more, which is the right instinct and also the wrong one if the immobilizer has stopped seeing the transponder.
I got there and the first thing I did was check the fob itself. The battery was not the issue. The circuit board inside had failed, probably a cracked solder joint from the flip hinge stress over time. These fobs take a beating every time the blade snaps open and closed, and eventually that mechanical stress works its way to the electronics.
Because the board was gone, I could not do a simple shell swap. I had to cut a fresh blade to match his lock, build the new fob from a blank, and use my programming equipment to enroll the new key into the vehicle's immobilizer. Since he still had the old physical key and the car had not been flagged as all-keys-lost, the process moved quickly. Programmed the transponder, verified ignition start, walked through all four remote buttons, checked range across the parking area.
He was back on the road in under an hour. The dealer was closed, and even if they had been open, this would have meant a tow and a wait that stretched days, not hours. That was the part that landed with him more than anything else.
