Out in Rancho Santa Fe, at The Crosby, a guy called me on a weekday evening after stopping for gas. His 2017 Jetta would not restart. The flip key went into the ignition, turned, and nothing happened. No crank, no start. The dash was showing a key-not-detected warning even with the key physically in the cylinder.

I had to cut a fresh blade to match his lock, build the new fob from a blank, and use my programming equipment to enroll the new key into the vehicle's immobilizer. Since he still had the old physical key and the car had not been flagged as all-keys-lost, the process moved quickly. Programmed the transponder, verified ignition start, walked through all four remote buttons, checked range across the parking area.
He was back on the road in under an hour. The dealer was closed, and even if they had been open, this would have meant a tow and a wait that stretched days, not hours. That was the part that landed with him more than anything else.
