BMW key programming isn't a dealer-only job for most models on the road. The car's CAS, FEM, or BDC module checks the fob's transponder through an antenna. Programming means registering a new chip code with that module. I do it through OBD or on the bench with diagnostic tools. No dealer bay, no BMW subscription required for most platforms.
A customer at REI near Mountain Meadows neighborhood was convinced his 2005 BMW 7 Series had to go to the dealer for a key. A BMW forum told him that. The dealer confirmed it. His neighbor with a BMW said the same thing. All of them were either wrong or outdated.
I met him at the REI lot over his lunch break. I used my VVDI Key Tool to generate a new key matched to his car's CAS module. His smart key, FCC ID LX8766S, was a 4-button smart key. Lock, unlock, push to start, trunk, all working and tested before he finished eating.
His car sat in the same spot the whole time and he paid about 95. Dealer wanted 200 and an appointment next week. The car doesn't know or care whether the key was programmed at a BMW service center or in a parking lot next to a stack of camping gear. The CAS module runs the same security handshake either way.
