2004 BMW 7 Series
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long does the key programming actually take once you're at my car?

For an add-a-key situation on the 2004 7 Series, where at least one working key still exists, the on-site work typically runs 30 to 60 minutes start to finish, including cutting and testing. All-keys-lost is a different job. The immobilizer module needs to be removed and worked on the bench, which adds real time. Total on-site work for an all-keys-lost scenario runs roughly 1 to 3 hours depending on what the module does. That's still one visit.

Q: Can you make a key faster than the BMW dealer?

Yes, by a significant margin. A dealer typically starts by ordering a VIN-matched key, which can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks depending on parts availability. Then you schedule a service appointment, drop the car, and wait. Owners of older 7 Series models have posted dealer wait times ranging from three days to over a month when parts had to be sourced. I show up at your location with the blank and the equipment already loaded.

Q: My 2004 7 Series shows a key warning on the dash but the car still starts. What's going on?

This is a known behavior on these cars. The vehicle security system and the ignition system are not exactly the same conversation. A fob that's failing, has a weak battery, or has a damaged antenna board can produce a key-not-detected style warning while the car still starts, because it caught the signal at the last second or caught it from a closer range than normal. Don't take the fact that it started as a sign everything is fine.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2004 7 Series. Can I program it myself?

No. The 2004 7 Series smart key system requires professional diagnostic equipment to register a new fob to the vehicle. There is no button sequence, no ignition-turn trick, no DIY relearn for this system. If you bought a fob online, it still needs to be cut and paired to your car by someone with the right tools.

2004 BMW 7 Series Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy in the Moorpark College Area called me on a Saturday afternoon. His 2004 7 Series was sitting in a parking lot near campus and he'd been clicking the fob for ten minutes with nothing happening. Not a low-battery flicker, not a delayed response. Nothing.

He'd already swapped the battery at an auto parts store down the street, so he figured the fob was dead and he needed a new one. Reasonable assumption.

When I got there, I asked him to show me the battery he'd put in. He pulled the fob apart right there in the lot. The CR2032 was the right size but it was a generic off-brand cell, and the contact on the negative side had a slight outward bow to it from being popped open wrong. The battery was technically in there, but the contact pressure was almost nothing.

I straightened the contact, put in a quality CR2032, and the fob came back like it had never been gone. Locked, unlocked, tested every button, walked the perimeter.

He'd been one careful battery swap away from solving it himself. The parts store swap just repeated the same contact problem with a different battery. That's the part nobody tells you when they hand you a new CR2032 over the counter.

He didn't need a new fob, didn't need a programming appointment, didn't need a tow to a dealer. Took about fifteen minutes in that lot.

BMW 7 Series Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What if I need a BMW 7 Series key after hours or on the weekend?▼

Call me directly. BMW dealers typically close their service departments on evenings and Sundays, and a 2004 7 Series key job is not something a service writer can hand off to a parts counter. Owners on forums regularly report being told to wait until Monday, then waiting additional days for key parts to be ordered. That's potentially days without a car.
