A guy in the Moorpark College Area called me on a Saturday afternoon. His 2004 7 Series was sitting in a parking lot near campus and he'd been clicking the fob for ten minutes with nothing happening. Not a low-battery flicker, not a delayed response. Nothing.
He'd already swapped the battery at an auto parts store down the street, so he figured the fob was dead and he needed a new one. Reasonable assumption.
When I got there, I asked him to show me the battery he'd put in. He pulled the fob apart right there in the lot. The CR2032 was the right size but it was a generic off-brand cell, and the contact on the negative side had a slight outward bow to it from being popped open wrong. The battery was technically in there, but the contact pressure was almost nothing.
I straightened the contact, put in a quality CR2032, and the fob came back like it had never been gone. Locked, unlocked, tested every button, walked the perimeter.
He'd been one careful battery swap away from solving it himself. The parts store swap just repeated the same contact problem with a different battery. That's the part nobody tells you when they hand you a new CR2032 over the counter.
He didn't need a new fob, didn't need a programming appointment, didn't need a tow to a dealer. Took about fifteen minutes in that lot.
