2001 BMW 7 Series Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Guy in Moorpark, over near Campus Canyon Park, was at his brother's place for a weekend visit. He had a 2001 BMW 7 Series, the E38, and his only key was showing its age. The rubber buttons were worn through, the housing had a crack running along the seam, and the blade had that slight bow you get from years of pocket carry. He asked me straight up whether an aftermarket replacement would hold up as a daily driver or if he needed to go OEM through the dealer.

The OEM fob carries the BMW roundel and a dealer markup that makes your eyes water. Aftermarket blanks for the LX8FZV use the same HU92 laser-cut blade profile, same ID44 PCF7935 transponder chip, same 3-button layout, same CR2032 battery, and the same circuit board footprint. In daily use the difference is cosmetic.
I cut the blade on the hood of his brother's truck, programmed the ID44 chip to his EWS3 module through the 20-pin connector, and synced the remote. Tested lock, unlock, trunk. Then the real test: cold start. Fired right up, no EWS warning on the cluster.
He held both keys side by side for a minute, comparing. The aftermarket shell was maybe a half shade lighter on the plastic. That was it.
Where aftermarket goes wrong is cheap sourcing. Thin shells, wrong chip revision, button pads that mush out in two months. I test every batch before it goes in the van. Bad lots get sent back. His key got the same blank I've run through hundreds of BMW jobs without a callback.
