Yes. On the 2001 7 Series, the broken piece typically comes out with the right extraction tools without destroying the lock cylinder. Once it is clear, I decode the existing lock, cut a new key blade to match, and verify it operates the door smoothly before moving on to programming the remote functions. No reason to involve the dealer or replace the whole lock assembly just because a blade broke.

What exactly is a remote head key, and why does programming matter so much on these?

A remote head key is a single unit where the key blade and the remote fob are one piece, no separate fob hanging off a ring. Your 2001 BMW 7 Series uses this setup. Inside the head is a transponder chip that the vehicle's immobilizer has to recognize before it will allow the engine to start. The three buttons handle your remote lock, unlock, and the third function on the fob.

The reason programming matters: the immobilizer stores a specific code matched to your authorized keys. A freshly cut blade with no programmed chip, or a chip that has not been enrolled to your car, gets rejected every time regardless of how perfectly the blade is cut. The car simply will not start. Programming is done through the diagnostic port on site, and once it is done, the key is fully married to your vehicle.

My BMW is showing a key-not-detected warning. Where do I start?

Start with the CR2032 battery in the fob. This is the most common cause on this generation, and it is a two-minute fix. Pop the battery out, look at the contacts for any green oxidation, wipe them clean, and seat a fresh battery firmly.

If the warning persists after a new battery, try holding the fob directly against the ignition barrel when you turn the key. There is a backup antenna in that area specifically for situations where the fob signal is too weak to register from a distance. That often gets you started long enough to deal with the real issue.

If neither of those works, the key may have lost synchronization with the immobilizer and needs to be re-enrolled with diagnostic equipment. At that point, call me.

Can I buy a replacement fob online and program it myself?

No. The 2001 BMW 7 Series does not have a DIY add-a-key sequence you can run from the driver's seat. Enrolling a new key requires professional diagnostic equipment communicating with the immobilizer through the OBD port. Plenty of owners have bought fobs online thinking they would handle the programming themselves and then called me anyway. If you already have the blank, bring it along. I can program it. But the key itself needs to be new or professionally wiped before enrollment, not a previously paired fob from another vehicle.

My remote buttons stopped working but the car still starts fine. Is the key dying?

Not necessarily. On this generation, the transponder side and the remote side of the key operate on different systems. If the car starts, the chip is communicating fine. Dead remote buttons usually point to the CR2032 being low, corroded contacts, or worn button pads that are no longer making clean contact with the circuit board. Open the fob, inspect the pads, replace the battery, and retest. If the remote still does not respond after a fresh battery and clean contacts, the board or the receiver in the car may need attention. That is a job for a diagnostic scan, not a full key replacement.
