Got a call from a guy near Poindexter Park in Moorpark. He had a 2000 BMW 7 Series, the E38, and a story that made my teeth hurt. Another locksmith had already cut and programmed a key. The engine cranked strong but died immediately every time. The other tech told him the EWS module was bad and left.
The EWS wasn't bad.
What happened is the other locksmith programmed the transponder to the EWS but never aligned the ISN between the EWS and the DME. On these E38s, the Siemens MS42 or MS43 DME has to share a matched ISN with the EWS module. Without that handshake, the DME kills fuel and spark after about one second of cranking. It's not a fault. It's the system doing exactly what it's supposed to do.
I used an HU92 Lishi to verify his blade cut was correct, then went in through OBD-II. Read the EWS data, pulled the ISN from the DME, and wrote the complete sync so the key, EWS, and DME were all speaking the same language. His 3-button remote head key, part number 6955750, started the car clean on three consecutive tests. I showed him the handshake confirmation on my programmer screen so he could see it himself.
He'd already paid someone else for a job that was never finished. I made sure this one was done right, on site, for a fraction of what a dealer would have wanted.
