There's a VFW post near Downtown Moorpark, and a guy flagged me down in the parking lot before I even finished pulling in. He'd already paid someone else to make a key for his 2000 BMW 7 Series. The car would crank, run for a second, then die. Every time. The first locksmith told him the immobilizer control module was bad and left.

I've seen this before. The module was fine.

What the first locksmith skipped was reading the internal security number out of the engine management module. On these early BMW systems, the key gets programmed to the immobilizer unit, but the immobilizer unit and the engine module also have to share a matching security code. If that three-way relationship isn't confirmed and written correctly, the engine computer sees a mismatch and cuts fuel. The car cranks because the starter has nothing to do with that security check. The dying is the system doing exactly what it's supposed to do.

I verified the blade cut first, then connected through the OBD port. I pulled the security data from both control units, confirmed the mismatch the first locksmith had left behind, and did the full sync. The fob, which carries the factory FCC ID and matches the dealer part number on the case, is a 3-button remote head key. After the sync, I ran three consecutive start tests. Clean every time.

I showed him the tool screen so he could see the confirmed match himself, not just take my word for it.

He'd already paid someone for work that didn't work. That's the part that stings. The module was never the problem. The job just needed to be finished correctly the first time.
