2009 Chevrolet Traverse Transponder key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
GM's immobilizer programming isn't a dealer-only job. It hasn't been for years. The car's body control module checks the transponder chip through a coil around the ignition barrel or through a proximity antenna on push-to-start models. Programming a new key means telling that module to accept one more chip code. I do it through the OBD port under the dash with a cable and a computer. No dealer bay, no lift, no GM-only subscription software.
A customer at the Target in Port Hueneme was convinced her 2009 Chevrolet Traverse had to go to the dealer for a new key. She'd read it on a forum, her friend told her the same thing, and the dealer's website said "visit our service center for key programming." All of them were either wrong or outdated.

Her car sat in the same parking spot the entire time and she paid about 96. Dealer wanted 204 and an appointment next week. The car doesn't care whether the key was programmed in a dealer bay or a Target parking lot. The security handshake is identical either way.
