2020 Chevrolet Traverse
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How does the mobile key replacement process actually work for a 2020 Traverse?

You call, give me your year, make, model, and VIN, and I confirm the right fob and blade for your specific Traverse before I head out. I bring everything: the correct key blank, programming equipment that talks to GM's security system, and the tools to cut and verify the key on site.

Q: What should I have ready when you show up?

Three things: the vehicle, a valid photo ID, and proof of ownership. Registration works, title works. I pull the VIN from the dash plate or door jamb to verify the key specs on my end. Same documentation a dealer would ask for, but you're handing it to me in your driveway instead of a service counter.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2020 Traverse. Can I just program it myself?

Not on this system. The 2020 Traverse smart key requires a diagnostic tool connected to the OBD port to register a new fob. There's no ignition-turn sequence, no button combo, no onboard self-programming routine for a proximity key like this one. That kind of DIY relearn is a feature of older bladed-key setups, not a push-button start vehicle. If you've already got the fob, that part's done.

Q: My 2020 Traverse shows a key warning on the dash even though the fob is in my hand. What's going on?

Usually one of three things. First suspect is the fob battery. A CR2032 that's getting weak can cause the car to lose consistent communication with the fob even when it's inches away. The dash will flag it before the fob goes completely dead. Swap the battery first. Second possibility is interference. Certain parking structures, electronics near the ignition area, or even some phone cases placed right next to the fob can disrupt the signal enough to trigger a detection warning.

2020 Chevrolet Traverse Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was parked near the old train depot in Downtown Santa Paula when the call came in. Guy had a 2020 Traverse and his fob wasn't waking the car up the way it should.

He'd walk up to the door handle and nothing would happen. Sometimes it would catch, sometimes it wouldn't. He'd already tried standing closer, tried it from different angles, tried locking and unlocking manually. He figured the whole key was failing and the dealer was already in his head about a replacement fob.

When I pulled up, the first thing I did was pop the fob open and check the battery. CR2032, and it was the original from the factory. The voltage read low enough to explain everything. Dropped in a fresh cell, snapped the housing back together, and walked the car with him standing right there.

All five buttons responsive. The door handles waking up at normal approach distance. Push-button start reading the fob through the center console like it's supposed to. The whole thing.

He looked at me like I was going to tell him there was more to it. There wasn't. The fob was never failing. It was just running out of power slowly enough that he didn't connect it to the battery.

The dealer quote for a new fob and programming was sitting in his phone. It was a lot. A new CR2032 from my kit and a few minutes on site cost him a fraction of that. I showed him how to crack the fob housing himself so he knows for next time.

Chevrolet Traverse Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I need to bring my 2020 Chevrolet Traverse somewhere for a replacement key?▼

No. I come to you. Whether you're at home, at work, or stranded in a lot somewhere in Downtown Santa Paula, I pull up with the key blank, cutting equipment, and GM-capable programming tools. Everything gets done next to your vehicle. Dealers will typically ask you to drive in with a working key or have the car towed to their service bay.
