I was parked near the old train depot in Downtown Santa Paula when the call came in. Guy had a 2020 Traverse and his fob wasn't waking the car up the way it should. He'd walk up to the door handle and nothing would happen. Sometimes it would catch, sometimes it wouldn't. He'd already tried standing closer, tried it from different angles, tried locking and unlocking manually. He figured the whole key was failing and the dealer was already in his head about a replacement fob.
When I pulled up, the first thing I did was pop the fob open and check the battery. CR2032, and it was the original from the factory. The voltage read low enough to explain everything. Dropped in a fresh cell, snapped the housing back together, and walked the car with him standing right there.
All five buttons responsive. The door handles waking up at normal approach distance. Push-button start reading the fob through the center console like it's supposed to. The whole thing.
He looked at me like I was going to tell him there was more to it. There wasn't. The fob was never failing. It was just running out of power slowly enough that he didn't connect it to the battery.
The dealer quote for a new fob and programming was sitting in his phone. It was a lot. A new CR2032 from my kit and a few minutes on site cost him a fraction of that. I showed him how to crack the fob housing himself so he knows for next time.
