I got a text from a guy in Old Town Goleta on a Saturday afternoon. He was parked off a trailhead near the hills outside town, had gone out for a few hours, and came back to an empty pocket. The key was somewhere on the trail. Not in the car, not in the lot. Gone.
His 2015 Traverse was sitting right where he left it, and it was going nowhere.

When I got there he was sitting on the front bumper, backpack still on, looking at the car like he was waiting for it to apologize. I set up on the hood of my van, decoded the lock cylinder, cut a replacement key blade, and then connected to program the transponder. The immobilizer has to see that chip and accept it before the car will stay running. That's the part people don't expect when they picture a locksmith job.
We tested it twice. Cranked, started, stayed running. He pulled out of that lot under his own power.
He mentioned on the way out that he'd called the dealer first. They told him Monday at the earliest, bring it in, and quoted him a number that made him wince. He saved a good chunk coming this way, and he didn't have to abandon the car for two days.
