She had just left urgent care with her kid and a bag of prescriptions waiting at a pharmacy that closed at nine. The 2024 Traverse sat in the parking lot and would not start. She pressed the start button, nothing. Tried again. Nothing. It was seven in the evening and the dealer was already closed.

When I got there she had the fob in her hand, pressing it like that was going to change something. I opened the fob. The CR2032 was reading nearly zero volts and one of the internal contacts had shifted just enough to make intermittent contact unreliable. I replaced the fob, used my diagnostic tool through the OBD port to register the new one to the vehicle, erased the old fob from the system so it could not be used if it turned up somewhere, and tested every button plus the door handle touch sensors on all four doors.
Then I walked her through the backup start procedure so she would know it if a fob ever got low before she could replace the battery.
From her phone call to the engine running was under an hour. She made it to the pharmacy with time to spare. The dealer, if they had been open, would have meant leaving the car overnight. Sometimes the job is not complicated. It just needs to happen right now, not tomorrow.
