I was parked near the beach access at Faria Beach on a Thursday morning, finishing up notes from the last job, when the call came in. A guy with a 2020 F-Pace had driven out from Ventura proper and his fob had gone completely dark. No lock response, no unlock, no warning on the dash when he walked away. The car would still start because the fob was physically close enough for the passive entry system to catch it, but he had no idea the fob was failing. He found out the hard way when he got to a grocery store, walked ten feet from the car, and the door would not respond to anything.
He had already tried a new battery. That is always the first call.
When I pulled up, I asked him to hand me the fob before I touched anything else. Opened it on my tailgate. The CR2032 he had installed was a no-name cell from a gas station rack, and it was reading low voltage on my meter even though it was supposedly new. Cheap cells can test weak out of the wrapper. Beyond that, the contact plate had a faint white haze on it, meaning the previous battery had sat long enough to start venting. Cleaned the contacts, seated a quality CR2032, and snapped the housing back correctly.
That alone got the fob communicating. But I kept going. Walked the perimeter of his F-Pace, tested every one of the five buttons from 30 feet out, checked that the passive entry was picking him up on both front handles, ran three starts. The whole job took maybe 25 minutes.
He mentioned the dealer had told him over the phone that a fob replacement and programming would take a few days because they needed to order the part. He had already mentally accepted that timeline. When I told him his original fob was fine, he looked at it like he had never seen it before.
He did not need a new fob. He needed the right battery seated correctly and clean contacts. Done at Faria Beach, on site, no tow, no wait.
