Got a call from a guy over in Loma Vista neighborhood in Ventura. His 2007 R-Class R350 was sitting in the driveway with zero working keys. His wife's key had been getting flaky for weeks, short remote range, intermittent "Key not recognized" on the dash cluster, then one morning it just quit turning over entirely. I pulled up and started with the EIS. On FBS3 cars like this, the EIS module holds the key data in the NEC chip on the board. I used the VVDI MB tool to read the EIS, pulled the password, and got a clean look at what keys were registered. Two slots filled, neither one talking anymore.
Cut the HU64 blade on my mobile machine, matched to the lock data. Programmed the new transponder through the OBD port, wrote the key file back to the EIS, and synced the 4-button remote using the on-board procedure. Tested all four buttons, lock, unlock, trunk, panic, then started and killed the engine three times to make sure the immobilizer wasn't going to hiccup.
He sat on his front steps the whole time, watching. When it fired up clean the first time, he just nodded like he'd been holding his breath for a week. The whole thing took about 35 minutes from arrival to him holding a working key. The dealer had quoted him over a week wait and wanted the car towed in. He kept his R-Class right there in the driveway.
